Community Airlines, New Tanzania budget airline

I wouldn't be the first to say 'Africa's the latest emerging market' and when a story comes out that Tanzania has started a budget airline, it shows this continent is demonstrating its economic ability to expand and grow.

Tanzania is one of Africa's most beautiful countries and has a healthy tourist industry. Its new passenger service, Community Airlines, was created to stimulate the economy in the country.

The chief executive is a Mr Paul Chizi said the name is "a reflection of the Tanzanian community - which means it is a true people's choice"

An example of the prices on Community airlines - a single fare from Dar es Salaam to mount Kilimanjaro Airport is 49,000 Tanzanian shillings, around $42 USD.

This airline will be most welcomed by the thousands of tourist's and business people who have to rely on the bus service to travel around the country.

Community Airlines will use modern 118-seat Boeing 737-200s and start flying around June or July.

Air Downunder, Budget flights from the UK to Oz and NZ?

This website airdownunder.com came to my attention today. It claims to be a budget airline that can take you from the UK to Oz from AU$899 rtn / £380 rtn or Auckland to London from NZ$1099 rtn.

Here is some of the information from their site;

"Air Downunder is set for take off from Melbourne to London Stansted towards the third quarter of 2008. Flights from Auckland should take off towards the end of 2008. Online booking will be available in February 2008.

Air Downunder are currently in talks with a major Asian airline to acquire two Boeing 747 jets for their two opening routes. Air Downunder names top management, aims to offer lowest fares from UK to Australia Nov 2007, Melbourne

Australia's newest budget carrier Air Downunder has unveiled its top management. At the same time, it is serving notice to rivals that it aims to be the lowest priced carrier in the region.

Paul Moss, a veteran of the pharmaceuticals industry, was named as Air Downunder's chief executive. William Smith, the managing director and co-founder of Air Downunder will be the airline's chairman."

Its an interesting website which really is lacking in quality of content, however it's not April 1st so I will keep an eye on.

Expect a fresh blog as soon as the first plane load of Air Downunder passengers happily arrive at their destination.
